A public lecture on Standards of Transparent Extractive Industries Resource Management was presented at the Physics and Power Engineering Department of the Kharkiv National University on 23 May.
Experts from the NOVA Energia NGO presented information about the specifics of taxation of extractive companies according to Ukrainian law, and share with the audience their insights about the environmental and social problems of extractive regions and approaches to their resolution.
The attendees have received information about the current status of implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in Ukraine; they have learnt that EITI is a tool for obtaining reliable information about the funds paid by extractive companies for exploitation of subsoil resources and a tool of supervision over government and businesses with regard to appropriate management of natural resources.
Presented at the lecture was a Statute for a competition of student papers on the results of EITI implementation in Ukraine and sustainable management of natural resources.
The competition objectives include:
- engaging the youth in researching the problems of EITI implementation in Ukraine and sustainable management of natural resources in the extractive regions;
- facilitating the provision of complete and unbiased information about EITI;
- raising awareness of citizens about EITI.
Entries of materials to the competition shall be accepted from 28 April to 7 June 2017.
