A roundtable Transparency of Hydrocarbon Production in Chernihiv Oblast and Its Significance for Local Communities was held in Chernihiv on 8 June.
The event was intended to build a constructive dialog between the government authorities, extractive companies, and the public, and also to discuss the pressing problems in the Chernihiv oblast related to operation of extractive industries. The event was attended by representatives of the Chernihiv Oblast State Administration, including Deputy Chairman Serhii Serhiienko, representatives from the Department of Housing and Communal Services and Fuel and Energy Complex, Department of Ecology and Natural Resources, extractive companies, territorial communities, and mass media.
The participants discussed at the roundtable the present status of EITI implementation in Ukraine. Let us recall that active efforts are underway in Ukraine to implement the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), being an international standard of transparent management of resources and financial flows in extractive industries, which is improving competitiveness and investment climate of the regions, and contributes to development of local communities in whose jurisdictions minerals are extracted.
Experts of the NOVA Energia NGO familiarized the attendees with the findings of the Second National EITI Report, and discussed the problems of the extractive sector in Ukraine, which remains complicated and has a number of regulatory, legal, economic, social and environmental problems.
The roundtable was conducted as part of the Municipal Finance Strengthening Initiative (MFSI-II) Roll-out Project regarding the assistance in implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in Ukraine component. The project is financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the Institute for Budgetary and Socio-Economic Research (IBSER).
