The Concluding Ukrainian-Slovak International Conference

The concluding conference on the topic of Enhancing Competitiveness of the Regions was held at the Great Conference Hall of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kyiv on 25 June 2009.
The event was held as part of implementation of the project Enhancing Competitiveness of the Ukrainian Border Areas in the Market Environment funded by the Slovak International Development Agency and implemented by the Institute for Budgetary and Socio-Economic Research with the M.E.S.A.10 Slovak Center for Economic and Social Analysis, this effort being supported by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.
The conference was intended to summarize the findings developed in the preceding phases of the said project and developing the proposals to strengthen competitiveness of Ukraine's border areas via improved system of regional development financing and State regulation of regional development.
The conference, which brought together at the roundtable more than 30 representatives of government institutions, non-governmental sector, international expert community, and Ukrainian researchers, was also attended by the leading Slovak experts who have years of experience working at economic departments of the Government of Slovakia and Slovakia's mission at the European Union.
The participants of the conference have raised and discussed the pressing issues of State regulation of Ukraine's regional development, special characteristics of socioeconomic development and competitiveness prospects for the Zakarpattya Oblast, which was selected as the pilot region for this project. The participants have familiarized themselves with the results of project implementation, general recommendations regarding Ukraine’s economic and regional policy provided by the Slovak experts, and also discussed the issues of enhancing competitiveness of the regions, in particular, the Trans-Carpathian region.
