Discussing Topical Issues of Local Government in Ukraine
On 15 December 2009, the National Institute for Strategic Studies hosted a roundtable discussion on the topic “Local Self-Government in Ukraine: Status and Development Prospects,” which was also attended by experts of the Institute for Budgetary and Socio-Economic Research.
The discussion participants also included officials from the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, leading Ukrainian scholars, local government development experts, experts of non-governmental think-tanks, and representatives of local governments.
The participants discussed the following issues:
1. Operational efficiency of local public authorities: obstacles and collisions.
2. Problems in the development of effective mechanisms of local self-government.
3. Directions and ways of improving the capacity of communities to ensure appropriate quality of life at the local level.
