Kyivans Can Suggest Own Projects to Improve Living in Capital City
06 October 2016
From now on, residents of the capital city will have an opportunity to take part in the allocation of public money by submitting their own projects for improvement of municipal infrastructure. This process is known internationally as participatory budgeting where city residents themselves decide on what purposes some part of the budget funds will need to be spent. In the first year of participatory budgeting in the capital city, the Kyiv city government will allocate UAH 50 million for this initiative.
“Participatory budgeting is an open dialog between the city government and the city community regarding the allocation of some part of municipal budget. City residents will submit their projects intended to improve the level of comfort of living in the city, in particular, in the area of energy conservation, education, healthcare, infrastructure improvements, and sports, social projects and other areas. The projects to win the greatest support of Kyivans during an open ballot will be implemented at the expense of city budget,” emphasized Kyiv Mayor V. Klychko.
The USAID MFSI-II Project has developed a user-friendly online platform named the Citizens’ Project, which the Kyiv residents can use to submit their own projects for improving life in the capital city, as well as vote for other presented ideas.
Receipt of projects has already started and will continue until 23 October, and the voting will open on 1 November. Implementation of the winning projects is scheduled for 2017.
