Lviv Students Learn about Changes in Regulation of Extractive Industries and EITI

On 21 December, the Lviv Trade and Economic University hosted a seminar The Role of Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in Implementing Reform of Ukraine’s Energy Sector. Transparency as a Tool for Overcoming Corruption in the Sector and Creating New Opportunities for Development of Local Communities.

The students and teachers were familiarized with the EITI standards, introduced to the results of the EITI Report for 2015-2016; they discussed the use of information technology in combating corruption and preventing shady schemes in the extractive industries. Also, the seminar participants discussed the prospects of applying the legislative draft No.3038 (passed by the Verkhovna Rada recently, on December 20) for the development of infrastructure of rural communities in extractive regions, and allocation of rent fees for use of subsoil resources to benefit extractive regions of Ukraine, starting 1 January 2018.

The event was conducted by the EnergoTransparentnist Association with support from the National EITI Secretariat in Ukraine and the USAID Municipal Finance Strengthening Initiative (MFSI-II) Roll-out Project with regard to assisting in implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Component in Ukraine.
