Winners for Best EITI Media Coverage Competition Announced
  A ceremony of announcing winners of a competition for best media coverage of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in Ukraine (EITI) was held in Kharkiv on 14 December.
More than 30 media pieces have been submitted for the competition from the Sumy, Donetsk, and Kharkiv oblasts, such materials covering the issues of EITI implementation; budgetary processes related to payments by extractive companies; participation in identifying the projects required for development of regional infrastructure; protection of natural environment; and clarification of the essence, goals, and objectives of EITI, analysis of problem issues in the local communities of extractive regions and ways of their resolution.
   The competition winners are:
1st place: Fedir Nyshcheta, Kharkiv Oblast Radio, Energoispyt (Energy Test) Show
2nd place: Lilia Naumova,  Sumshchyna (Sumy Region) newspaper, article Oil Extractive Industry of Sumy Region: Oblast’s Advantage or Problem?
3rd place: Olena Kolesnikova, BKP Editorial Office of the Trudova slava (Workman’s Glory) newspaper, article For Transparency in Extraction of Hydrocarbons.
3rd place: Yulia Poltavets’, Online hist’ (Online Guest) TV show, OTB Studio.
   The jury have rated the media materials according to the following criteria: Topic relevance; compliance with the journalistic standards (for journalists) and ethical norms; completeness and depth of topic analysis; level of journalistic mastery; degree of piece’s impact; audience coverage; and depth of author’s proposals vis-à-vis the raised issues.
   As part of this event, the Project experts Yurii Buts, Olena Agapova, and Olena Krainiuk conducted master classes in using modern tools for monitoring of financial flows and working with databases of licenses for use of subsoil resources in Ukraine.
   A nice bonus for the competition winners was provided by the letters of recommendation signed by the Coordinator of the Energotransparentnist Association Vitalii Filenko for participation in the Eurasian Media Course in Extractive Industries whose personal attendance sessions will be held in Istanbul in March 2017.
